Question:
There is a man distributing food such as dates, fruits and rice packets in the Masjid. Am I wondering whether we can eat them as we do not not know where he is earning his income whether halal or haram ? Please let me know if I can eat the food distributed by him.

Answer:
In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
Allah Ta’ala orders us in the Qur’an to stay away from suspicion:
ياأيها الذين آمنوا إجتنبوا كثيرا من الظن إن بعض الظن اثم (الحجرات: 12)
Translation: O you who believe! Avoid much suspicions, indeed some suspicions are sins.(Al-Hujuraat: 12)
Furthermore, the Prohet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam has mentioned:
إياكم و الظن فإن الظن أكذب الحديث (رواه مسلم: 1570)
Translation: Beware of suspicion, for suspicion is the worst of false tales.(Muslim: 1570)
It is understood from the above quoted that we should have good thoughts of others. In the enquired situation, it is also possible that the person may be distributing the item on behalf of other people. Accordingly, it is permissible to accept the distributed items and consume them.1
