Invitiation From Someone Who Earns Haram, Piercings Query

Question:

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

Moulana, I would like to know that if you go to someones house and you know for sure that their income is haraam, what should you do? Are you allowed to eat the food? Should you avoid going there?

And also, in the hadeeth Nabi alayh salaam speaks about bells. In the tafseer they say bells like they hang on a cow. So what about baby rattles, are those jaaiz?

And lastly, which parts of the ear and body is it jaaiz to pierce?

Jazakallah.

Answer:

In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

1)  In principle, if a person whose income is from a Haram source invites one for food, then if more than half of his wealth is Halal, it will be permissible to accept his invitation and eat the food he offers.

However, if more than half of his wealth is Haram, then there are two scenarios:

a) If the host clearly states that the food was acquired from Halal money, then it will be permissible to accept his invitation and eat the food he offers.

b) If he does not clearly state that the food was acquired from Halal money, then it will not be permissible to eat the food he offers. It will be necessary upon one to investigate and ensure that the food is Halal.[i]

It should also be noted that one should be diplomatic in such issues.Whilst one should avoid eating Haram, avoid embarrassing anyone. If one is in a constrained situation, for example,an invitation from a close family member, then one should offer something as a gift with the intention of the food being in exchange of the gift.

2)  If the rattle does not contain any haram elements such as music, pictures of facial features etc., then it will be permissible. However, it is still better to avoid the use of any rattle resembling a bell.[ii]

3)  It is permissible for a female to have her ears and nose pierced.[iii]It is not permissible for her to have any other body-part pierced such as the navel, lip, tongue, and eyebrows etc.

A woman may have multiple ear piercings on the lobe, helix, tragus or cartilage with the following conditions:

a) The piercings do not entail any bodily or medical harm.

b) The piercings do not entail any specific emulation (Tashabbuh) with the non- believers (kuffar).[iv]

c) The piercings are not done due to any custom or belief which is against the dictates of Shariah.

It is not permissible for males to have any body-piercings at all including the ears and nose.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
