In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
Brother in Islam,
Shariah has placed great importance in choosing names. The Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam has mentioned:
مَنْ وُلِدَ لَهُ وَلَدٌ فَلْيُحْسِنِ اسْمَهُ وَأَدَبَهُ (رواه البيهقي في شعب الإيمان: 8299)
Translation:Whoever is graced with a child, he should give him a beautiful name and beautify his characters(Bayhaqi:8299)
Furthermore, Rasullullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam has said:
إِنَّكُمْ تُدْعَوْنَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ بِأَسْمَائِكُمْ، وَأَسْمَاءِ آبَائِكُمْ، فَأَحْسِنُوا أَسْمَاءَكُمْ (رواه أبو داود: 4948)
Translation: Surely you will be called on the Day of Judgment according to your names and your fathers’ names. Therefore, beautify your names. (Abu Dawud: 4948)
In principle, it is preferred to keep names that are mentioned by Allah Ta’alah in the Qur’an, by Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam inAhadith, and those names usually kept by righteous Muslims. 1
The name Zain means beauty.2 The name is generally coupled with another noun such as Zain-Ul-Islam, Zain-Ul-Abideen, Zain-Ud-Deen. The meaning thereof would be the most beautiful of the worshippers.3
In Islamic history, the Great Grandson of the Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam, Ali ibn Husayn ibn Ali, was famously known as Zain-ul-Abideen. 4 Furthermore, it was the name of the great jurist and Author of Al-Bahr-Ar-Raiq, Zain-ud-Din ibn Nujaym. Therefore, it is appropriate to keep the name Zayn.
The name Zayna is the feminine form of Zayn which means beauty/beautiful.5It is a suitable muslim name for females.
